Socrates Theory Essay Socrates’ claim that the â€Å"unexamined life is not worth living† is very true. Imagine if you were to just go through the motions from birth to death and never be able to put meaning to any of it, why do it at all? Going through the motions is just a step in life, however learning which motions to repeat and which should never be repeated again is how life is measured. Examine everything you do from your morning ritual to your nightly routines. In the morning, you brew some coffee or stop by your favorite store for your cup of java. Why would you keep doing it? Simple answer without examining it closely would be because it helps motivate me and wakes me up. What you typically don’t stop and examine is that in order for you to make it or go get it, you are already awake. It motivates you is simply a response when in fact you motivate the purchasers to ensure you have the coffee accessible. You have simply put yourself, mentally, in a routine and justify it with responses you tell yourself so that you keep doing it. Simply replace your coffee with tea or water and your mind will keep telling you it helps you wake up and motivates you. In the evening you go home and prioritize the rest of your day. Meals for the family, laundry, clean, homework with the kids, and if there is time enjoy some outside or event with the family. Again without examining each step, it just seems like a routine. Instead ask yourself why you do these things and in what order; all of a sudden your day will make sense! You ensure your family is well nurtured to achieve greater things and enable them to live longer through smart diets and good eating habits. Your might prepare meals due to the fact your spouse never really cooks for flavor! You do laundry and clean to ensure a neat environment and might entice your family to assist so that there is more family time to have fun with instead of just doing chores. Doing homework with the kids is not to make sure they are understanding the material, it is staying connected with your children and taking notes along the way to keep your knowledge up to date and informed of what they are being taught. In fact you might be able to schedule events around what they are learning to enhance their experiences as well as bonding time.

(Ceruzzi 1) In the Information Age of today society has become dependent on technology; every aspect of our lives have become centered on how fast and efficiently something can be accomplished. The use of computers aids our stride to becoming technologically advanced. But how did we as a society arrive at such a point? How did we end up becoming so reliant on computers? These questions will hopefully be answered by looking back at the history of computers to date. During the WWII, Eckert and Mauchly designed and built the ENIAC, an electronic calculator that computed firing tables for the U.S Army; it established the era of computing in the United States. After the War, the drum came about as the reliable, inexpensive but slow memory device. ERA sold the drum machines, advertising their dependability, large storage capacity and their high speed capabilities. Eckert and Mauchly in 1951 started the intrigue with computers with their UNIVAC, a computer with computing abilities; as time passed the UNIVAC became essentially important. During the 1960Ï€s, The Case 1107 provided the main computing facility for Case Institute of Technology in Cleveland Ohio in the United States (Walker). The UNIVAC was extremely large yet quiet; its front cabinets ranged from floor to ceiling. The central processor was capable of computing simple arithmetic equations. The Case 1107 was one of the first computers on Earth to provide access from remote locations both at other locations on the campus and as far afield as Erie, Pennsylvania (Walker). A transformation in circuit technology during the 60Ï€s, enabled the transitor to become reliable and cheap enough to serve as the basic circuit element for processors (Ceruzzi 49). By 1971, Intel had already released the world's first generally available DRAM chip and therefore, built the world's first single chip general purpose microprocessor. Two years later in 1973, IBM developed what is considered to be the first true sealed hard disk drive.

Stereotypes in the Classroom

â€Å"If Americans are to embrace diversity, the conscious and unconscious expressions of racism (sexism) within our society must be identified and done away with. † Teachers must prepare themselves and the children for the ever changing challenge of interacting and communicating with diverse races. Reduction of fear, ignorance, and personal detachment are possible benefits to a multicultural education ( (Wilson). Multicultural education is the potential catalyst to bring all races together in harmony. Educators today have a moral responsibility to move beyond the limits of racial context to a social context that embraces humanity without barriers and fear. The responsibility of teachers is to get to know the children and the families that will be entering the program. Classrooms need to reflect every child and every family in the class. Do not make assumptions of what a child’s ethnic background is. This is putting a stereotype as to what you think of that culture. Get to know the children so that you can respectfully and accurately reflect them, their families and their lifestyles in the classroom ( (York, 2003). Children should feel like they belong in the class. Teachers need to make sure that they greet each child by name as they enter the classroom at the beginning of the day and to say good bye at the end of the day. Teachers need to remember to stay away from commercial teaching materials. Cartoon imagines inaccurately portray human beings and human diversity (York, 2003). Multicultural children’s books can be used effectively as a means for coming to understand individual human stories, and the universal emotions and themes they contain. Teachers need to be careful when picking books to use in the classroom. A book may look good when you first look at it but it may contain one or more stereotypic images. Teachers need to be very critical in evaluating books that they want to use in the classroom. Make sure that authors are writing fiction for young children that authenticate a culture’s heritage.

Groups Of One Hundred High School Juniors - 884 Words

Participants The participants for this study will consist of two groups of one hundred high school juniors. Both groups will attend two different public high schools in Illinois. One group will attend a high school where they wear uniforms and the other group will attend a high school in which they do not. Both high schools will have the same rating on greatschools.org as well as have the same free-reduced lunch percentage. This will help to mitigate any disparities between general academic achievement and socioeconomic status. Students are only eligible if they are enrolled in college prep courses. Students will not be considered if they are currently taking honors or advanced placement courses. This is to ensure that the data is not skewed in one direction based on the level of rigor a student has received. This is also an attempt to have the students as similar as possible to determine the relationship uniforms have on performance. Participants will be heavily recruited by researchers with the support of the schools administration and teaching staff. Researchers will connect with the principals of each high school; explain the research study, intended outcomes, and how they could potentially benefit from knowing the results of the data. With permission, flyers will be posted around both schools advertising the study, the eligibility requirements, as well as the monetary reward for completing the study.
